Learning Disabilities Workshops, December 2009 and January 2010

A workshop on learning disabilities was held at the home of President-elect Cathy Stewart on December 14, 2009. Due to the positive response of members to this topic, a repeat workshop on the same theme was held on January 11, 2010.

Featured was an hour-long video titled “How Difficult Can This Be?” The film was made in 1989, but the information is still fresh, inspiring, informative, and entertaining. It allows the viewer to look at the world through the eyes of a learning disabled child. It features a unique workshop (F.A.T. City) attended by parents, educators, psychologists, and social workers, who all participate in a series of classroom activities which cause “Frustration, Anxiety, and Tension”—emotions all too familiar to any student with a learning disability.

MD/DC members watched the video with rapt attention. It was paused several times—at both sessions!—allowing members to unwind and relax. “This is intense stuff,” remarked one member.

After the viewing, all those in attendance had several personal tales to tell from their own teaching experiences about teaching students with various types of disability.

Members brought food for a potluck lunch, and enjoyed each other’s company in an informal setting.
