Fiddle Day 2011

by Alessandra Schneider

The Third Annual Fiddle Day was held on Saturday morning, October 15, 2011, at The Lutheran Church of Saint Andrew in Silver Spring. Once again, it was a good turnout of students and teachers who wanted to expand their fiddle knowledge and repertoire. Clinicians Andrea Hoag and Ellen Jacobs shared many songs and styles, as well as stories about the music and the meaning that has been passed down from generation to generation.

The group learned some songs by rote in the traditional call-and-response form. During the brief snack break, participants were able to browse the extensive display of fiddle music and recordings provided by Gailes’ Violin Shop. The workshop concluded with a wonderful little concert performed by the two clinicians. As chairperson of the event, I would like to thank the committee members, Marion Spahn and Dorée Huneven, as well as Lorraine Combs. Without their hard work and dedication, this event would not have been possible!
