The MD/DC Chapter Annual Membership Meeting was held on May 15, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. at Bonaparte Breads on South Ann Street in Baltimore, Maryland.

Following the Board Meeting, members dined on quiche, salad, and dessert in this quaint and picturesque restaurant on the waterfront in the Little Italy section of Baltimore. Please visit our Photo Gallery page for several additional pictures of members at this event. During dinner, a student string quartet from the Baltimore School for the Arts performed a couple of movements from a Haydn quartet.

Guest speaker Daniel Heifetz spoke eloquently about his life as a violinist—a Tchaikovsky Competition prizewinner, a professor of violin in top music schools such as Peabody Conservatory and the University of Maryland, then as a victim of a later-in-life-discovered neurological genetic defect that brought his performing career to a halt.

He then founded the Heifetz Institute in 1996. This is a unique six-week summer program held every year on the campus of Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Music students, ages 14–25, are taught that the emotion of music, as well as the technical and musical aspects of music, can be learned. Students (about 65 per each summer session) receive two 1-hour private lessons per week from internationally known musicians, such as Andre Watts, Pinchas Zukerman, Ani Kavafian, Pamela Frank, and James Buswell, to name but a few. Students have several performance opportunities per week. They also participate in daily performance and communication training classes, which are based on the following components of communication: public speaking, voice, drama, movement, and freedom of expression.

The evening ended with the presentation of the Chapter Annual Awards: Mark Pfannschmidt received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award.
